Those words were true then, but they are especially prophetic for our generation. Immorality is prevailing in the land. There is a decay of conscience. The media lack moral discrimination. The church is degenerate and worldly. The world has lost its interest in religion. Satan rules in our halls of legislation. Politics are corrupt, and humanist politicians are chipping away at our Judeo-Christian foundations. True change starts with the pulpit preaching repentance, but that doesn’t let the rest of the body of Christ off the hook. We all have a part to play in ushering in the next great awakening.

Do We Have Faith for Awakening?

Hopelessness has infiltrated the church. Some doom-and-gloom prophets insist there is no hope for America, pronouncing God’s impending wrath without a way of escape through repentance. Again and again in the Bible we see the mercy of the Lord toward those who would turn back to Him—and even toward those who cried out to Him in the midst of judgment. Isaiah pronounced judgment over and again but is still known as the prophet of hope.

Our intercession can hold back judgment. Even though the Lord ultimately destroyed the city, Abraham’s intercession for wicked Sodom paved the way for Lot’s deliverance from the fire and brimstone (Gen. 18:16–32). Moses interceded for Israel when God said, “Now therefore let Me alone, so that My wrath may burn against them and I may destroy them. And I will make of you a great nation” (Exod. 32:10). And Ezekiel 22:30–31 tells a sad story that we should take to heart before we decide it’s not worth praying for God’s mercy over America:

I sought for a man among them who would build up the hedge and stand in the gap before Me for the land so that I would not destroy it, but I found no one. Therefore I have poured out My indignation on them. I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath. Their own way I have recompensed on their heads, says the Lord GOD.
